MAF-04 --- The possibilities:

Imagine that a museum could not afford a frame for each painting in their collection and the number of paintings a museum could exhibit (at one time) would be limited to the number of frames it had on its walls… with interactive works this is the case.

Submission information

How is a work ‘selected’?

There is a direct correlation between requirements of a work and our ability to accommodate it on exhibition. However, a work is not accepted until you have received a confirmation email with a unique reference number.

Does the Festival 2004 offer Grants?

The Festival 2004 does not offer grants. However, artists who propose a lecture or workshop, or those who need to be present for the setup of their work we may consider an invitation. (One must tick the corresponding boxes in the Entry Form, send full information etc.)

With an invitation, artists are encouraged to apply for travel funds at their home country.

I have submitted and Entry Form. What now?

Please wait for our reply. If your work have got accepted send it per post to our address.

If you will send questions after sending in an application, but your application was not considered yet, our reply may be confusing.

Allow me to explain the process of accepting a work:

Applications are sorted as: online/offline/video/installations/workshops, then processed, evaluated and replied one by one in the order of receipt. This takes from 3 days to a week and in some cases - invitations/workshops/installations – a reply may take longer.

The current cue (due Feb. 03rd ) is about 80 applications pending.

However, technical questions regarding submissions and entry forms are replied immediately - disregarding an application status - i.e. pending / approved / rejected entry.

Also note that most web and offline art-works will be accepted.

The Festival is a platform for artists to show their work and not aiming to be a judge on content or artistic statements - we believe that the audience should have a chance to explore works and select the works they wish to interact with.

However, this does not mean that incomplete works or poor submissions, or non suitable content will be accepted.

In general “Art” and Political statements are accepted. Extreme pornographic content - is rejected.

Viruses, Bots and alike are considered artworks if submitted as such thus will be considered for exhibition as long as the work does not create (extreme) damage or jam exhibition equipment.

Please make sure you fill in the entry form. You will get a reply.

On 2rd February a hacker attack on our mail server caused some incoming mails to be permanently deleted. If you suspect your mail did not arrive to us, ask if we have received it. Please do not send it again unless you are sure we did not get the original mail. We have taken extra care and changed all passwords so this will probably not happen again.

"Resource Sharing" is a way MAF-04 found to accommodate a certain type of computer based works. Now we can accept more works then the actual number of computers we would need if we aught to present each work on separate equipment. This way we not only create a dynamic exhibition space but also give our audience greater choice and a chance to choose and intimate with your work without pressure of a queue.

And occasionally, several computers can serve a single artwork! - This is a unique way to accommodate works that otherwise would require resources beyond reach. Also, when the Festival require a break to school class presentation a single work can be shown and explained using all computers.

All this and more: since all the computers are connected and online, not only that any work can be called up onto any of the 'stations' but presents an instant-recovery solution, prevents visitors from crashing computers or deleting data.

This type of system was developed and tested at "Thailand First New Media Art Festival 2003" and proved exceptional benefit.

Technically speaking, in the (invisible) "center" of each exhibition hall there is a file-server onto which pre-submitted content from your CD-ROMs is installed and served over LAN. The exhibition 'stations' provide an extensive pictographic menu that helps our Thai and non-English speaking audience interface with your work along with links to your "artistic concept" submitted with each work and other online resources, URLs etc.

When the Festival is over we will be able to analyze the server logs and determine access to each and every work and we will also have at hand a collection of the messages visitors left at the electronic guest-book… Of course this setup is not suitable for all types of Media Art but for many it works exceptionally well.

Walla!  In each frame, all paintings are visible!

Beyond the above the Festival presents a Video Art section and screening program, meetings and lectures with visiting artists at the University's Gallery and on various locations downtown Bangkok.

For Vj, music and other performances we are working out a deal with the trendy "Siam Discovery Center" including the option to show there installations as well - this is still pending option.

|||| Non interactive video or audio||||: as video art or sound/music that uses rather ordinary equipment (as a TV screen, a computer monitor, a video projector and or stereo speakers etc) should be submitted as VHS PAL, VCD, or CDROM (PC format). Send a DVD only if you can't reproduce your work on another

media. Please do not forget to attach a contents sheet with track names and durations  ;)

|||| PC based works ||||  that do not require special setup beyond regular software installation should be submitted on CDROM (PC format) not later then 25th February. Movie and audio files are acceptable on CD, VCD or DVD. Don't forget to include the codec installer suitable to play your content. + We do not recommend sending home burned DVDs due compatibility issues.

|||| Online, Offline and Software works ||||: We strictly divide "web type interactive" computer based works into three categories: "online only", "offline" and "software". All offline content will be pre-installed on central file servers and accessed over LAN thus the strict partition.

    |||| Offline||||: Works that can operate offline should always be submitted as such on a CD. This includes all html, flash and alike works, java, executable code etc. An Interactive DVD will be considered in this category.

    |||| Online||||: "online only" we call works that absolutely require Internet or LAN connectivity - such as database driven works, bots etc. Online works should be clearly marked "online only" and can be submitted via email (in the body of your submission). Additional material to be locally printed and presented next to the work (such as a statement, artistic concept etc) can be sent in via email.

    |||| Software: ||||  or executable code can be submitted via email attachment or a CD per mail.

|||| Installations||||: anything beyond a conventional setup will fall into this category and this means that MAF-04 will need some time to find out if it is able to accommodate the work within budget and equipment restrictions. A final decision on our ability to accommodate your work in the Festival will be made closer to the deadline of MAF-04 call for submissions (5-20th February 2004). By that time we will better understand the nature of the works as a whole, and together with final decisions to be made with our equipment sponsoring partners MAF-04 will be able to re-confirm the setup of your work at a certain venue. This will leave you with a window of at least 2-6 weeks to actually submit the physical parts of your work.

However if your installation is self contained and includes all technical equipment and you need help only with transport and setup MAF-04 will look into the option to help you ship your installation to Thailand.

|||| Physical objects||||, Prints, posters etc, or installations which are complete in a box ready to ship: Please contact us ASAP. MAF-04 will help you transport the object /installation before 1st March. Email iceca@culturebase.org with the subject line: "MAF transport + your name"

|||| Overseas shipment||||: One of our sponsors is an international currier company. If you are interested to send works using their service you will have to send us accurate shipping information: address, size, weight, and value. Note that it's your responsibility provide the container and insure the content. Also note that there is an 'import tax' on technical equipment entering Thailand (refund on re-export).
